Position Overview This is supervisory work of residents at the Neaves Davis Center for Children. The employee is responsible for overseeing all activities of the residents at the center as well as ensuring that all documentation in daily logbooks is legible and correct. Work involves supervising residents on any given shift, including daily activities, recreational periods, school, personal cleanliness, and other periods as scheduled. Employee observes the behavior of, counsels with, and provides information about residents detained. Person in this classification must be able to preserve order and deal with disciplinary problems if required.
The Neaves Davis Center is a 24-hour facility. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)- Supervises all activities of the residents at the center to include meals, rest periods, personal cleanliness, recreational periods, school, and all other daily activities as required.
- Must also be able to maintain order and deal with disciplinary problems if required.
- Prepares observation, incident and behavior reports as required and ensures that all information in the daily logbook is legible and correct.
- Transports juveniles to and from scheduled appointments (e.g. court hearings, medical, dental, other detention facilities, etc.)
- In some situations, employees may provide crisis counseling in an effort to calm volatile situations
- May be called upon to work overnight shifts if needed
- Must be able to work 3rd shift if required
Education and Experience Education and Experience - Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: Graduation from high school or GED.
- Some experience in a correctional or institutional environment.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability - Some knowledge of sociology and child psychology as applied to delinquents.
- Some knowledge of law enforcement and security measures.
- Some knowledge of institutional maintenance and upkeep.
- Ability to gain the confidence of socially maladjusted children; be able to establish and maintain effective working relations with parents and guardians.
- Ability to plan and supervise children's activities.
Other Requirements Physical Requirements - Must pass a physical exam.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- The person in this position frequently communicates in person and on the telephone.
- Needs to be able to operate office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
- The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access the file cabinet, office machinery, etc.
- Work is physically demanding may involve sitting or standing for prolonged periods, walking, kneeling, stooping, grasping, throwing, climbing and lifting.
- Vision must be adequate to visually monitor activities and make inspections.
- Hearing must be adequate to hear instructions and to monitor the activities of juveniles.
- Must be able to read and write the English language and have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Other Requirements - In accordance with PREA guidelines, all candidates are required to undergo a background check through the Department of Human Resources to assess any history of child abuse or neglect.
- Prospective employees joining the team at the Neaves-Davis Center for Children must acknowledge that their inability to successfully pass this background check will lead to the termination of their employment at the center.
- During their initial week of employment, new hires must also fulfill the requirement of completing and passing the online PREA test titled "PREA: Your Role in Responding to Sexual Assault." This test is accessible online, and employees are expected to provide a certificate of completion or passing to the facility's Compliance Officer.
